Tunnel/Jacobs: Children's Literature Briefly (Chapter 16)
Tunnell and Jacobs discussed controversial books. They explained that some books can be considered dangerous, because they can weaken morals, incite revolutions, and indoctrinate our children. In fact, they mentioned that during his time, Adolf Hitler considered books so threatening that he banned all books that challenged Nazi policy. Tunnell and Jacobs also mentioned that our country's First Amendment is constantly under attack by individuals or organizations who seek to control individual freedom of choice. They also discussed censorship of children's books within the school systems, and some of the more controversial books in the past forty years. Tunnell and Jacbos believe that we must promote individual choice and intellectual freedom.
